What 3wk meant to me….

June 2, 2008

There was a time I listened to 3wk religiously at work, and as I first got broadband, a bit at home. Here are some of the artists and songs it turned me on to:

  • Mark Robinson
  • Champale
  • Havergal
  • Jr. Corduroy
  • Pedro the Lion
  • Dismemberment Plan
  • Kathryn Williams
  • Sarah Dougher
  • Self
  • Juno
  • Karate
  • Unwound

….as well as many others. Looking over this list, it’s interesting- they played so many bands that you couldn’t hear anywhere else, and now, it seems many bands that no longer exist.

I haven’t listened in years, but I would probably still encourage people to check it out.

WFUV

May 1, 2008

Here are a few of the great artists or songs I heard first on FUV:

  • JJ Cale, Crazy Mama
  • Eric Clapton, Easy Now
  • Joni Mitchell’s Hejira
  • Rickie Lee Jones
  • The Band
  • Susan Tedeschi
  • Robert Randolph

Their Friday afternoon broadcast of Mountain Stage at 2pm is great- turn it on while you are at work, and it will always put you in a proper mood for the weekend.

It’s not just about new music- they played great albums you won’t hear anywhere else, whether it’s George Harrison’s or Eric Clapton’s first solo albums, Zero Seven & Royksopp, Massive Attack, or any Jazz, Blues, Reggae or other ‘roots’ music.

They are going to launch a digital channel that seems like it would play more ‘typical’ college fare- indie bands, etc- but in lieu of a fancy new digital radio, I’m fine listening to 90.7.
